Rolex Watches

The word Rolex is an abbreviation of the French phrase "horlogerie exquise" and was the name chosen by Hans Wilsdorf in 1908 for his new watch brand. Rolex is the best known luxury watch brand in the world today and is the largest manufacturer of Swiss made certified chronometers.

In 1926, Rolex registered a patent to make his watches water resistant by using a case with a screw-down winding crown and it was a watch with this feature - the Rolex Oyster - that was worn by a cross-channel swimmer in 1927. By 1931 Rolex had invented an automatic permanent rotor winder which was used to launch the Rolex Perpetual. Another first for Rolex was the 1945 launch of the Datejust which was a water resistant automatic model with chronometer functions and a date viewer.

The Rolex Submariner was introduced to the luxury watch market in 1953 and was the first diver's watch that was water resistant to 100 meters. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual collection contains many desirable and popular models such as the Milgauss, Air-King, Explorer, Sea Dweller, Daytona, Yacht-Master and Day-Date. Rolex have two other collections called Professional and Cellini - Rolex's line of dress watches.
